Teen Addiction

Adolescence is a time for trying new things—experimenting with new sports and new activities, making new friends, starting at a new school, etc. For many teens, trying new things also means experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Teens use drugs and alcohol for a number of reasons. For one, many teens are curious what it feels like to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol as they begin to see others experimenting with it, or see it in the media. Additionally, it can be extremely difficult to avoid peer pressure from friends and classmates. Feeling grown up and fitting in is of utmost importance during adolescence. While some teens may experiment with drugs and alcohol very briefly, others may develop very serious problems. Experimentation can quickly become habitual, which can result in teen addiction.

Drug Intervention

Teenagers who abuse drugs often discover the negative implications of drug addiction after it is too late. In addition to the physically damaging effects of drug abuse, teens are susceptible to a number of other mental and emotional consequences. Drug addiction can lead to depression, academic failure, loss of privileges, damage to relationships, etc. In order to avoid these misfortunes, or in order to confront them, a drug intervention may be staged.

Alcohol Intervention

Alcoholism among teens is just as common, if not more common than drug abuse. Teen addiction to alcohol is most common in teens who have a family history of substance abuse, who are depressed or have low self-esteem, or who are having trouble fitting in. These feelings of emptiness or loneliness can lead them to experiment with alcohol. An alcohol intervention is the process of informing the individual of his or her behavior and assisting them into treatment. A great deal of support is required, and will increase the likelihood of success.
